Garden Design - Tooting, London SW17

- The garden will be transformed into a tranquil urban space fit for family use, entertaining and relaxation
- The area directly behind the house will be extended, with a paved area running the width of the garden. From this, several paved terraced steps will ascend to the garden proper, providing a platform for displaying pots and other object d'art within view from the house
- At the top of the terraced steps, a rusted wrought iron archway allows entrance to a paved pathway running down the centre of the garden. To either side of this pathway, raised beds constructed from used railway sleepers will be packed with planting of the clients choice, including a few suggestions by Earth Designs. Several rusted iron pyramids scattered amongst the beds will allow for the planting of clematis, accommodating the client's passion for the luscious climber. A bed of hardy evergreen and soft flowering perennials provides the planting palette with year round interest, texture, colour and form. Reed screening will be used to mask the existing boundaries and help to lend a sense of unity to the garden
- Half way down the garden the paved pathway will branch off to the left, leading through a second iron arch to a small paved area. Here, a rusted iron bench will offer an area for relaxation and reading, or for two people to sit and chat in the evening sun. Again, the arch will offer support to fragrant clematis and other climbers
- Continuing down the main path, the user will pass under a third and final archway and over a paved bridge spanning a sunken pond. On either side of the pond, rising from the sleeper beds, will be obelisks constructed from upended railway sleepers. Copper piping protruding from these sleepers will allow jets of water to cascade into the pond below
- Crossing over the paved bridge, the user will find themselves in a paved open courtyard. Flush beds to either side of will feature a 'Prunus Amanogawa' giving clusters of large, fragrant, semi-double pale pink blooms in late spring Here the sound created by the water feature will bring the garden to a wonderfully dramatic yet tranquil conclusion
- The lighting scheme will see step risers at the start of the garden with spot lighting throughout the space, serving to highlight the architectural nature of the archways and planting. Underwater lighting will create a nocturnal feature of the pond, while down lighters situated at each corner of the paved courtyard will allow for entertaining during the balmy summer evenings. The overall effect of the lighting will be to create a subtle and magical wash of illumination across the space
