Brief

The client has recently moved into this terraced property in Walthamstow. She enjoys gardening and would like to get the most out the small outdoor space.

The garden has a couple of different levels. The client would like to retain some storage and make the garden more accessible, with attention given to the lack of privacy in the space.

She would like it to have a courtyard feel, full of lush planting.

Solution

Directly outside the back door will be a pathway laid with Indian sandstone in arandom pattern. The existing church pew will remain, with a small water feature installed on the house wall opposite to give the area a courtyard feel with the gentle sound of running water.

The wall will be painted with a view to potentially getting a commissioned piece of street art at a later date.

The pathway leads down to the main section of the garden, stepping up under a rusted steel archway and terminating in a 2.7m diameter paved sandstone circle. The boundaries will be painted all round in Cuprinol Garden Shades in a soft purple grey colour.

A wooden storage box will be installed under the kitchen window.

Planting in the space will follow a silver, purple and yellow colour scheme with a Mediterranean theme. Climbers will be planted to adorn the boundaries, whilst evergreen shrubs and herbaceous perennials will provide depth around the paved circle.
