Cottage Garden Design In Woodford
A curved sandstone pathway will be constructed to sweep the length of the garden. The path will arc around a large oval lawn. This central arc of the path will host a series of circular timber arches which will provide height to the centre of the garden and create a sense of journey through the space. This sandstone circle will provide the base for a 2.4m hexagonal summer house. Planting in the space will be rich with long flowering perennials nestled next to evergreen shrubs.
Brief
This client grew up in the property and has recently moved back in following the death of her mother. They have another property in Leicestershire, but split their time between London and Leicestershire and wish to make the most of this exceptionally long and thin garden. They’ve already had it cleared but there are still quite a few trees remaining in the space. They are looking for a space that they can enjoy which is reasonably low maintenance.
Solution
The existing terrace and steps down to the lower area are to remain. A curved sandstone pathway will be constructed to sweep the length of the garden, down the right hand side. The path will begin adjoining the existing step and arc around a large oval lawn. It will then curve back and down the space to a second oval lawn. This central arc of the path will host a series of circular timber arches which will provide height to the centre of the garden and create a sense of journey through the space. The lawns will be edged with sandstone setts.
The path will arc around the second lawn to terminate in a large sandstone paved circle towards the bottom left of the garden. This sandstone circle will provide the base for a 2.4m hexagonal summer house. Climbing roses planted at intervals along the archways create a scented walkway to the second area of the garden. Planting in the space will be rich with long flowering perennials nestled next to evergreen shrubs. Tall grasses punctuate the space along with iris and blossom trees. Towards the rear of the garden three multi stem silver birch trees add a majestic, “feathery” tone to the space. We would recommend that some of the existing trees be further thinned out to provide light and moisture to the proposed new plants.
