A Gardener’s Garden in Leigh-on-Sea

Grow a Friendly Space

Brief

These clients have recently bought the property and are renovating the whole house. As part of the proposed plans, they are considering what they are going to do to their garden.

Solution

The proposed extension is coming out into the existing garden, and they are keen to make use of the only view to the garden as well as the area to the right hand side of the space. They would like somewhere to grow vegetables and have already ordered a greenhouse, and want to create zones within the space for different uses.

Directly outside the back door, an arc of Mimica Bone porcelain paving sweeps right across the space creating small patio featuring an eye-catching focal point in the form of a bespoke Corten weathered steel water bowl fed by a leaf fountain. The patio would also make a perfect spot to display a sculptural chair. Two steps deep steps will lead up to a circular porcelain patio bordered by a low evergreen hedge. An architectural Liquid Amber tree will mark the entrance to a large patio at the rear of the garden, with a multi stemmed amelanchier positioned in the back left hand corner.

A porcelain patio to the right hand side of the house will feature a decorative wrought iron gazebo with a backdrop of bespoke hardwood red grandma slatted fencing along the boundary. 2 steps framed by a low rendered block wall lead to the main section of the garden. Step over fruit trees edge planting beds on the right hand side, beyond which fruit bushes can be grown. This area will be paved with a mixture of porcelain slabs interspersed with gravel and creeping thyme. The paving will arc down the garden towards the greenhouse and shed, enclosed by two raised beds constructed from treated softwood timber planks. A utility area behind the shed will accommodate a water butt and compost.

The boundary fences will be replaced and painted with Cuprinol Garden Shades ‘Urban Slate’. The planting scheme will comprise a mixture of strong architectural forms with a few evergreen shrubs to provide winter interest.
