A Modern Garden Design Presentation – Japanese-style

garden design

Brief

The clients for this Thorpe Bay garden design have lived in their house for three years and have fully renovated the interior of the property. The garden is currently tired and overlooked, and has little of interest or excitement to offer the user. They would like a Japanese-style design with visual impact that is also a usable space.

Solution

Provision will be made for dining and a seating area at the bottom of the garden for evening entertainment.

Directly adjoining the house will be new patio laid with Indian sandstone paving in a random pattern. On the left hand side of this patio there will be a bespoke fixed table and bench seats, with an integrated horizontally slatted timber feature wall and ‘roof’ to create a Japanese-style booth.

Large designer white PVC globe lights will be suspended from the overhead canopy to provide stylish illumination to the dining area below.

The centre of the space will feature a large lawn with planting beds around the edge, containing architectural grasses and other planting.

A sandstone pathway will run down the right hand side of the garden and dogleg to join a second large patio area at the back of the space. Five timber half-arches will create a feature over the path. The dogleg section of the path will be bordered between the lawn with a rendered feature wall containing a ‘cut-out’ section in which decorative objects can be displayed.

A stainless steel water blade on the feature wall will feed a shallow stainless steel rill running down the garden between the lawn and the path. The rill will be edged with black grasses and will feed into a black pebble lined trough in the patio near the house.

A Japanese-style geometric timber screen will partially mask the rear patio from the rest of the space.

At the back of the space will be a second, tall, feature wall clad on the front with decorative slate V-tiles and featuring an integrated fireplace. This patio to the rear of the garden is designed for relaxation, as opposed to the patio by the house, which will primarily be used for dining, with a barbecue positioned in the side return

Planting in the space will be soft and feminine in a pink and white palette with evergreen shrubs and specimen plants chosen for year-round interest.
