Garden Design Clinic – June 2011

Grow a Friendly Space

This was a small garden design in Leeds, Yorkshire. The client had inherited this garden, and whilst it had been landscaped at some point in its history was now tired, old and in need of renovation.

The client liked soft curves in the garden, and Earth Designs suggested a combination of decking, and paved circles, to help create some rhythm and flow within the space.

A decked area directly outside the backdoor, was not going to encroach on the damp proof coursing and so the client would no longer have to endure the mass of concrete that had been laid over the years.

A step down from this decking on to a paved Indian sandstone circle, and then from there, on to a decked circular terrace. A large Indian sandstone circle, bisected the decking, allowing for one large flush entertaining and dining area, with a clear distinction.

A series of spherical sandstone balls, or box balls, covering the edge of the decking circle have helped to bring out the spherical motif present in the garden throughout the design.
