Sculpting the Landscape

Grow a Friendly Space

The strange, alien appearance of this aluminium hanging sculpture by artist Marisa Merz inspires a host of ideas and associations. With a fungal, organic look and space age curves straight out of a sci fi movie, the sculpture was originally created to be displayed in the artist’s house, showing that one’s living space can be bold, unusual, stylised, and very creative. It is this sense of individualism that informs the London garden design concept sketch created with reference to the sculpture.

A circular lawn is intersected by a series of circular decking platforms, rising from ground level. Tendrils of granite setts extend from the lowest deck platform down the space, while a curved granite sett pathway sweeps through the centre of the lawn to join a small ornate timber and stainless steel garden office pod on the right hand side of the garden. Adjoining this will be a small circular patio laid with rings of granite setts, on which an elegant spherical Fletcher and Myburgh hanging chair is given pride of place. Curved beds running through the centre of the space will accommodate a selection of spherical specimen planting.
