Garden design hotline #21: Landscaping in South Woodford, Moroccan-style

Katrina responded to an enquiry from clients who had extended their property but needed garden landscaping in South Woodford. They had fitted new bifold doors to the extension, but were concerned that the garden was below par in comparison

Creating a backdrop in South Woodford

Katrina explained that very often we spend more time interacting with our garden from the inside out. It is therefore critical to ensure that your focal points and garden in general do not let your interior down. This garden was on two levels, and it was important to ensure that the upper level was easily accessible. This would be so that the client could enjoy the space fully.

Area for entertaining

We had to ensure that an area for entertaining was included in the final design. Katrina proposed raised beds with a fixed, L-shaped bench attached to the wall with a large table in front. Occasional chairs would line the other side. This added a real punch to the garden with the possibility of easily sitting up to 10 or 12 people.

This client particularly liked some of our previous work with a Moroccan theme. Moroccan gardens can be pricey, but by including a few stylistic touches such as tiling a raised bed, it can give a real flavour of Moorish design.

Grow your own veg

Growing fruit and vegetables was also important to the client because they were keen gardeners. Katrina made sure that a potting shed was included in the final design. This combined with cordon fruit and espalier fruit trees meant that the space easily accommodated a diverse amount of homegrown produce without it feeling like an allotment.

Something for all the family

This was a family home that needed room to play. Katrina broke the space that was too wide, creating two sweeping sections of lawn across the garden, separated by a planting bed. As well as the grow your own plot, a trampoline was included in the back right-hand corner, slightly hidden from view by the rhododendron planting, but easily accessed from the second lawn.
