Garden design hotline #39:
Japanese themed garden fit for a party
A Japanese themed garden, fit for a party was the brief that Katrina received for this project. The clients live in Thorpe Bay and are looking to develop the garden space into somewhere that they could hold parties. It is a large space, and the clients wanted a Japanese theme. They feel the space was being underused, and with such a clear view from the back door, they really want to open the space up and make it an intrinsic part of their lifestyle.
Setting up for a Japanese themed garden
A large patio area directly outside the back door was proposed to provide ample opportunity for setting out extra tables chairs should they need to. A fixed bench table and benches would be incorporated with the Japanese themed garden pergola canopy over the top.
A pathway would run perpendicular to the house. Edged with planting, at night would be great lighting effects and shadowing.
Japanese inspired features
Either side of the pathway will be Japanese inspired screens. This large area at the bottom of the garden will also be suitable for having a party. A large outdoor fireplace centrally positioned along the back boundary commands the space, with garden design sofas cited on the left and right to set the tone for cosy evening.
Planting in the garden will be Japanese inspired – with lots of bamboos and structural plants focusing on foliage and form.
The client went on to commission a design package and then a design build for this Japanese themed garden.
