Grow a Friendly Space

There is nothing intrinsically wrong with this exceptionally large Oxford garden, but it doesn’t offer a great deal of interest and diversity for the owners. Although they are a long way from beginning their landscaping, they contacted Earth Designs with regard to the possibilities for their space so that they had a better idea of what would be possible when they are ready to get the garden landscaped.

They wanted a traditional space with a contemporary twist, somewhere suitable for adults and children alike. The garden has a host of mature trees, some of which they wish to retain. The house sits in the centre of the plot, with no demarkation between ‘front’ and ‘back’ gardens. A major requirement of the design is to divide the garden into smaller sections, so that each member of the family could have their own area. This would include a children’s play area, a utility area, a vegetable garden, as well as the main body of the back garden for which they plan to use for large scale entertaining.

To answer this brief, Earth Designs created a series of interconnected elliptical spaces, each with a different purpose in mind. The main lawn would be kidney shaped and curve around a large paved sandstone circle. Curved pathways, over which a series of archways with climbing roses are positioned the path takes you along the side of the lawn and is connected to the next area. Two elliptical grass lawns lead from one to the other and finally lead to a third, egg-shaped patio. This area will have a multitude of uses as the client had indicated a hot tub may be installed in the garden at a later date. Moving in the other direction, from the back of the house, a pathway leads to a children’s play area and then on to utility area containing a shed, log pile, dustbins and compost bin. From here a pathway leads to a lawn which was a front garden the entrance of the driveway was the opposite that or gravel area with a bench to take in the spectacular views of the countryside beyond.
