Modern Garden Design Presentation

Brief

This design is for a family garden in Thorpe Bay. The garden has not been touched since the family moved in many years ago and they are now looking for complete overhaul to enable them to start enjoying their garden space.

There is currently a large area of grass, flower beds which include mature planting, and old shed and a greenhouse. To the back left hand corner of the garden is a mature hedge, behind which is a vegetable patch. This currently divides the garden and takes up quite a lot space. This family garden design seeks to reorganise the garden to create one cohesive space.

Solution

Directly outside the back of the house an Indian sandstone patio will allow the client to access the garden from any of the house doors. The design seeks to reorganise the garden to create one cohesive space.

To the left hand side of the space, which gets the most sun, an Indian sandstone patio will allow the client ample space for dining and entertaining. A sandstone sett pathway will runs down the length of the garden, doglegging at intervals and accentuated by lavender hedges along the return of each dogleg. A slate monolith water feature will take centre stage at the head of the first dogleg. Large terracotta planters containing box balls will help to punctuate the space.

The path will continue down the garden past a new greenhouse, which will be flanked on either side by raised railway sleeper beds intended for vegetable and fruit gardening. Slate chip flooring in this area will complement the slate monolith and planters. At the back of the space will be the summerhouse, obscured by planting and the existing fruit tree. To the front of the summerhouse a slim sandstone patio stretches across two thirds of the garden, including a seating area in the back left of the space positioned to catch the late afternoon sun.

Planting in the garden will be both seasonal and with year round interest.

Delicate Japanese acers will sit amongst long flowering perennials, shade loving shrubs and evergreen foliage.
