Project Description

Earth Designs have years of experience working on all kinds of garden design in Hampstead. We are a skilled and reliable team of local garden designers and landscapers. On this page, we will take you through the process of designing specifically a secret urban garden in Hampstead.

The clients have lived at the property for a couple of years and are now turning their attention to the back garden. They would like a space they can relax and entertain in. The site is enclosed on all sides by high boundary walls and therefore quite shady. The new design should make the most of the sunniest spots. Other requirements include provision for heating/cooking and as much foliage/greenery as possible.

The main area of the space will be paved with ‘Florence White’ porcelain paving laid in stretcher pattern, with an inset path of sandstone plank paving running across the middle of the garden from the stairs. The plank paving will continue up front of the existing raised bed on the right hand side. The patio area will be large enough to accommodate a set of garden furniture, positioned around a gas burning fire bowl in the centre. The back wall will be clad with a ‘Design Clad’ large format porcelain cladding tiles with a Corten steel offset on the left. Bespoke storage units constructed from Red Grand is hardwood timber will be tucked away under the stairs to enable the client to store outdoor cushions and other items when not in use.

The right hand boundary wall behind the existing raised bed will feature a bespoke contemporary ‘vertical garden’, comprising a series of rectangular Corten steel planters stacked on top of each other. Each planter will be offset at a different distance from the wall, to create a dynamic and visually arresting focal point packed full of plants to really green up the space. The planting scheme will be lush and green, focusing on textured foliage and shade tolerant plants. A large Corten steel planter positioned in the left hand corner of the garden opposite the bottom of the stairs will feature a specimen acer tree to add some height to the space.
