Project Description

Victorian Courtyard Garden in Essex

Earth Designs have years of experience working on all kinds of garden design in Essex. We are a skilled and reliable team of local garden designers and landscapers. On this page, we will take you through the process of designing specifically a courtyard garden in Essex.

This plot was a good sized, sub-urban garden containing a few established plants and several mature trees needed to be removed. The garden had a split-level terrace structure that the clients were happy to keep, and some weathered and partly sound fencing. Neither of the clients are keen gardeners, so a very low maintenance space was highly desirable.

The upper terrace will feature a ‘Rustic Autumn’ natural slate patio in a formal ‘grid’ pattern, edged with a twin border of ornate Victorian tiles and ‘Barley’ natural slate. Planting in flush beds to the left and right of this paving will serve to mask the fence and storage area. Further screening of the storage area will be achieved with the erection of a 6 x 6 trellis screen, into which we will set a reclaimed Victorian stained glass pane, to create a highly unusual and eye catching framework to support climbers in the bed below. A focal point of the upper terrace will be two raised, slate capped railway sleeper pools, one either side of the steps, from which water will cascade over slate spouts into two similar pools in the terrace below.

We’re extremely pleased with our new garden. The designer has not only created an elegant and welcoming space but has also been sensitive to the wishes we expressed at our first consultation.
The execution was carried out, not only with speed and care, but with great efficiency and attention to detail. Considering that a large amount of material had to be brought through the house, the Earth Designs team managed to keep the disruption to our daily lives to an absolute minimum. The few problems that inevitably arose were dealt with quickly, creatively and, it must be said, with good humour.
The end result is that an overgrown wilderness has been transformed into an attractive and relaxing extension to our living space and we are delighted with the result. We only wish we’d done it sooner
