Small London Courtyard Garden Design
Art nouveau inspired curves are the backbone of this London courtyard in Stoke Newington.
Brief
The client recently bought this Stoke Newington terraced property. She enjoys being out in her garden but wants a more usable and low maintenance space. The area to the rear of the garden is dilapidated and dominated by a ramshackle shed. However as the client does not require storage, it could be repurposed as a seating area. The client is happy to retain the existing paving and overall layout of the space.
Solution
The existing decking and storage shed will be removed, and porcelain plank paving installed at the rear of the space. This paving will continue as a pathway that sweeps around the existing brick raised bed and curves through the main paved area to terminate at the corner of the house. The raised bed will be rendered, painted a colour of the clients choice, and capped with new grey sandstone coping slabs. New fences will be installed as necessary across the rear boundaries. Three planed softwood timber arches will be installed across the patio at the rear, adorned with laser cut pattered screen panels for decorative effect and to aid privacy. Decorative screen trellis will also be added to the rear fences and left hand boundary from the back of the raised bed.
The existing trees and hydrangea will be retained, but the rest of the planting will be refreshed and revived with a contemporary green and white scheme. The area underneath the large tree will be filled in slightly to create a little more space for a sofa and armchairs. A simple lighting scheme consisting of fairy lights, low voltage spotlights and up lighters will complete the space at night.
