Refurbished Modern Family Garden Design In Woodford Green, Essex
Brief
The clients have lived in the property for a few years. The clients bought the property from new and the existing landscaped garden had been completed during construction. However the garden design was not particularly inspiring. The property benefits from floor-to-ceiling bi-fold doors and windows stretching across the back of the house and so the garden is a major focal point from their primary living space. Over time, the clients have become bored of the bland view the current landscaping offers and feel now is the time to revive and rejuvenate the space.
Solution
The solution introduces a few features to create interest and give added definition to the space. The existing flooring has a tendency to become slippery, so the new design proposes replacing the section in front of the main bi-fold doors leading up the steps to the upper garden to improve the situation. Suggested material is riven black slate tiles. The existing raised bed and retaining walls thoughout the garden will be capped with the same stone and the walls re-painted. To the left of the space a storage unit constructed from red cedar slats will give the client somewhere to store cushions for an outdoor sofa and other garden equipment and toys. Double doors on the front of the unit will open to the lower terrace, while a smaller storage area will be accessed from the upper level. To the right of the lower terrace will be a bespoke den for the client’s child to call his own.
Complete with fun trapdoors and red Perspex windows, it will have a modern contemporary look and is designed to blend in with new red cedar horizontal slatted fencing which will top the garden’s boundary walls. The existing real lawn will be replaced with luxury artificial grass, giving the garden a virtually maintenance free, soft yet hardwearing lawn solution. The existing plants in the raised beds will be relocated wherever possible to the front garden and replaced with a new planting scheme, including a series of pleached trees along the back boundary wall. A selection of evergreen, long flowering perennials and grasses make up the remainder of the planting. A huge splash of colour will be provided by red Perspex panels attached to the wall behind the pleached trees. Further interest will be created by rows of red fibreglass planters flanking either side of the steps from upper to lower terrace.
